Liederkreis, Op. 39 is a song cycle, composed by Robert Schumann. The poetry for this cycle was taken from Joseph Eichendorff's collection of poetry called Intermezzo. Schumann wrote two cycles of this name—the other being his opus 24—so this work is also known as the Eichendorff Liederkreis. It is one of the great song cycles of the 19th century.
Schumann wrote the cycle in 1840 (starting in May [1]), the year in which he wrote so many lieder that it is known as his "year of song" or Liederjahr.
There are twelve songs in the cycle.
